Wolf 359: My First Leap Into Audio Drama Podcasts

The Wolf 359 Logo / Gabriel Urbina I am a huge space nerd. Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of going to space and having adventures and whatnot. Rockets and spaceships are my favorite mode of transportation in any sci-fi media. And most of all the wonder of the infinite cosmos in beyond description for me. But also, space is horrifying. Like, really horrifying. And one podcast I found over the summer encompasses all of that and more. Welcome to "Wolf 359." " Wolf 359 " is a fictional audio drama podcast set at an unknown time in the future around a real star of the same name. The podcast follows the hijinks of a small crew of corporate-hired astronauts aboard a research space station known as the Hephaestus. The cast at the beginning consists of Communications Officer Doug Eiffel, Commander Rene Minkowski, Dr. Alexander Hilbert and the Hephaestus A.I. Hera. The early episodes are short and unserious adventures about the small crew stuck keeping themselves entertain

Glow 5k: My Last Time Around

Every year I find myself volunteering for various different service events that ONU hosts. From blood drives to repair jobs and leaf sweeping I have done it all. But every Fall since 2022 there is one event I have looked forward to again and again, the Annual Glow 5k Walk and Run. This 5k is in support of ONU's 2023 Suicide Prevention & Awareness Week that has happened annually for the past several years to raise money for suicide prevention resources. Organized by Thomas Frost and the rest of the Student Affairs team, this event is the final organized footnote of the week as a celebration of everything we have accomplished and worked towards in bettering mental health in the community. Where I fit in starts about one year ago when the first time they organized this 5k they found they needed extra help to set up and tear down the event. Being in a fraternity, one my main goal on campus is to be of service to others so naturally I took up the opportunity when Thomas asked me to

Building Gunpla: What I Do With My Downtime

The current Gundam shelf in my apartment If you know me well enough you would know that I am quite the nerd when it comes to space, robots and comic book-adjacent media. From a young age I wanted to be an astronaut and studied space like my life depended on it, Transformers was some of the first media outside of what my parents directly showed me that I was exposed to, and my dad's comic books were my favorite things as a kid. Well what happens when you combine all of those things? You get Mobile-Suit Gundam. I wrote a previous blog on a Gundam series called "Mobile-Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury" earlier last year, so if you want to check out elements of one of the TV shows click here . But what I really want to talk about is the Gundam model kits that accompany the suits in the shows.  The model kits that emulate the suits in the Gundam anime are called Gunpla, derived from the name "Gundam Plastic Model." Since the 1980s Gunpla have been popular model ki

My First Ever Cross Country Meet

The opening shot of the first Fall 2023 Cross Country Meet / ONU Athletics Growing up, I only ever participated in one sport, soccer. Because of that I never really branched out into watching other sports. The only one I did begin to watch was football in highschool, but that was the extent of my exploration of this avenue. But once I got to college I was encouraged to look for other sports to watch and root for. Thankfully, attending Ohio Northern University made that fairly easy. My freshman and sophomore year made viewing sports outside of football difficult because many of the other sports were not allowed to have a season. But once I became a junior this became very easy for a couple reasons. Firstly, my neighbors in my dorm hall last year were a large portion of the ONU women's soccer team so they regularly encouraged me to attend their games! This was my first big exposure to watching live sports outside of football. I found this very exciting because of how action packed so
