ONU Blog: I Made Fudge!

 So if you know me well you'd know that I like to cook and bake. And if you don't know me...well now you know I like to cook. I can't always cook with my schedule and lack of money, but when I can I love to make complex and rewarding dishes. Salmon cakes, roasted Brussel sprouts, garlic crusted mac & cheese and more. But above all else I have a sweet tooth and love to make desserts. One of my favorite desserts to make is fudge.

Fudge is a very simple recipe but highly modifiable and enjoyable. Many recipes mark themselves as "3 ingredient fudge" where the only ingredients are chocolate, condensed milk, and vanilla. While this basic combination is delicious on its own there is much more depth to be added. And that is half the fun of cooking and baking, experimenting! Try adding ingredients you would use in other recipes like brown sugar or almond extract. Or try something wild like lemon juice or potato chips. I've tried multiple combos both "original" and borrowed and I've settled on a few favorites. But will I reveal what they are here? No! I will not because then you will either ask me to make it or steal my recipes (or ignore me if you are boring). Also I already made some fudge as of posting this blog and I've used my grocery budget for the week so I'm out of ingredient money. 

While I will not reveal the full recipe or ingredient list of the fudge I made this week here, I did take a picture of my setup for making it. This would normally reveal the all the ingredients I use in my signature fudge. However the ingredients I needed were out of stock at Community Market! So what you see here is a modified version of what the true "Michael's Fudge" is. If you can reverse-engineer the true recipe from a picture good for you. If not then keep trying until you find one you like, then you'll have your own recipe to use!

  1. I also love trying new recipes and adding a special twist to make them my own. Although I have never made fudge before, I just might have to try soon. If I made fudge, I think my recipe would be inspired by an ice cream flavor. I am not sure which one yet though. I hope you continue to find time to do the things you enjoy amongst a busy college schedule.

  2. ’ve never made fudge before. I think I should try it soon! I love to cook and bake as well. I think experimenting with recipes is really fun. Ingredients can get pricey. Sometimes I try a new recipe and it turns out terrible. I still have fun anyways!

  4. I’ve never made fudge before and even didn’t know that there was fudge in this world before came here. I love cooking and baking as well so I want to try it one day. Usually, when I bake something, I change the ingredients to my preferences. I’ve not made something at ONU so I want to try to make fudge when I have an opportunity!!

  5. After reading this all I wanted to do was eat the peanut butter flavored fudge that my grandmother makes. I have never made my own, and I am using this post as some inspiration.

  7. Now I’m hungry for sweets. I wish I could find the motivation to cook since I consider myself to be a creative person. It would be hard though since I cannot drive to a store. My roommate is the one who cooks a lot to keep a healthy body for her sports. The sweets that I can get at school are made with bad ingredients. Fudge sounds like a fun solution to relax from school stuff.

  8. I have always wanted to learn how to really cook. I can cook things like eggs, chicken, and the occasional cake from dollar general. However, being able to make fudge and other creative things would be such a unique skill to have. Neat you can make delicious fudge by using ingredients from Community Market.

  9. Being of the receiving end of the fudge, it was good. I haven't had fudge on its own before and I felt pleased with the taste, maybe a bit too much seeing as how I ate about a third of the 1st container.

ONU Blog: Live Coverage of Homecoming Football

 Over the weekend I had the pleasure of being in the best seat in the house for ONU's homecoming football game. I work for the team filming clips and plays for review at a later date. Because of that I get to stand in the scoreboard endzone and see plays head-on. I can also zoom in and see plays up close with my special camera.  My viewpoint from the endzone So with this in mind I decided to live tweet the event from my viewpoint! I could get in close and see everything in more detail than anybody. This was an interesting challenge as I had to quickly swap between using the camera and tweeting while making sure I didn't miss a play. In the end I was able to tweet a lot more than I thought I could and get coverage for every single quarter to Twitter. I hope I can find more opportunities to do something like this in the future. ONU Blog: It's The Little Things

I have always been one to appreciate little things. Tiny gifts? Love 'em. Small dogs? They have my heart. Bite-sized snacks? Easy pick. Short people? They're more on my level becasue I'm short for a guy! But what I more mean by "little things" is small details about everyday life. Things that people don't always pay attention to much. Those things mean the world to me.  When you're the kind of person who always try's to acknowledge the smallest details, when someone does the same it means so much. That is the boat I'm in. Many people I've met simply try to see the big picture of it all and leave the small things to be smoothed over. But when I approach something I try to take it piece by piece. Each piece may be small, but with time those small pieces make something big! It takes more time than blanket approach attitudes, but I've always been a "quality over quantity" person.
