Chapter 2: Personal Branding (Featuring the Correct Textbook!)

This week in Essentials of Social Media Marketing (the correct textbook this time after some minor technical difficulties) we covered how to develop a personal brand online. A "personal brand" is a way is saying and displaying who your are online. From your posts to your subscriptions, each way you interact with the digital world is a part of your personal brand. The chapter outlines a nine step way to set up your online brand. The worksheet as it is called makes a well structured case for each point. Originally I found it weird how the book asked me for my passions, values and attributes as if I were filling out a dating profile. But as I continued with the activity it became more clear to me why. This personal brand is you as the digital world sees you. Anything you make a part of this brand is what people believe are a part of you. Say you can speak five languages on LinkedIn, as far as employers are concerned you can absolutely do that regardless of if it is actually tru...

Rush Season Begins...and Never Ends

Well it's that time of year again! University classes have started meaning the sixteen week gauntlet of education and seasonal coffee addictions is off to a running start. I make it sound slightly miserable but in reality if you pay attention in class and even have the slightest clue how to manage your own time it is not that bad.  But that is not todays topic. What I want to discuss today is the other time of year that happens only once a semester and is the all encompassing blanket that takes over my mind body and sprit...fraternity rush season. This is a period of time where new freshman come to ONU and are introduced to the cacophony that is organizational extracurriculars. Most organizations just recruit on the basis of general interest in them. But fraternities are a bit more complex where we have to have a formal period to organize events and meetings to gain interest. Because when your organization comes with a price tag, a lifetime of stereotypes you have to defeat and the...

Chapter 1: Digital Marketing Foundations

This week I read the first chapter in our new social media book called "Digital Marketing Essentials". Even though this is a very introductory chapter there was still new things I learned.  I was already aware of the vast amount of technical terms involved in digital mediums, but section 1 of chapter 1 opened my eyes to how dense this subject matter can really be. In a simulation to look up Amazon.com the computer had to go through seven  whole steps to just open a website! I find it interesting that this all happens under our noses every day when we use the internet. I suspect that those seven steps are a simplified version of what actually may happen with accessing a website. Section 2 was the part that gave me new information and what I wanted to talk about today. This section featured the AIDA model. The AIDA model is a breakdown of the steps needed to create and keep a customer. "A" stands for awareness, grabbing customers attention through mediums such as adve...

Hello and Welcome! What Are You Looking At?

Hello there reader! My name is Michael Gallagher and this is my first official blog. This section in particular will be in relation to my life at Ohio Northern University, ONU for short. This series of blogs will be walking you through my life at ONU this fall semester.      I've been here at ONU for two full years now. I originally started as an electrical engineer but now I am in my current major of writing and multimedia studies and have been for the past 3 semesters. I've done various courses from rhetoric to business writing, editing to marketing, and now I have arrived at course known as Principles of Social Media.     I didn't know much about this course prior to writing this blog post. It merely filled a box on my credit requirements. But regardless I am excited to find out everything I can learn here in this course.     For now I'll keep this short and sweet. Check back soon for more details on...
